Tips to Achieve Your Weight Loss Goals

If you’re like over 38% of the resolution-making public, losing weight or improving your health is near the top of your list of changes to make in the New Year, just like it was last year and probably for many years before that. After many years of giving up, how do you make sure that 2016 is the year you succeed? The answer is not one you’d expect: If you want to succeed at losing weight and/or improving your health, don’t put ‘lose weight’ or ‘improve my health’ on your list of resolutions.

Seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it?  However, if you’ve read our previous post on making resolutions stick, you already understand that in order to succeed, your resolutions need to be far more specific. If you just want to lose weight or improve your health, how will you know when you’ve succeeded? Technically, if you lose 1 pound, you’ve succeeded at both – albeit nominally – but is that going to be enough? Probably not.

Analyze your reasons for wanting to lose weight or improve your health.  Do you want to fit back into your favorite jeans? Be able to keep up with the little ones in your life? Avoid illness? Without a tangible reason for attaining your goal, you’ll quickly find your will-power and motivation waning.

Create an attainable and measurable goal, then break it into smaller milestones.  ‘Lose weight’ is both vague and unmeasurable. Whether you want to lose 5 pounds or 50, the first step to succeeding is creating an end goal. But the longer it takes to achieve a goal, the more opportunity there is for failure, which is why it’s important to recognize and reward yourself for reaching smaller milestones along the way.

Visualize what success looks likes. Countless researchers have reported on the effects positive visualization. By envisioning what you will feel or look like when you’ve reached your goal, you’re increasing your chances of succeeding exponentially.

Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goal. Really believe it and reassure yourself every day. If, in the back of your mind, there’s a nagging voice telling you that you can’t, focus on silencing it because it’s wrong.

PLAN. PLAN. PLAN. Regardless of what your actual goal is, having a plan is essential. Do your research and find something that will work well for you. Just because something worked for your sister’s friend’s aunt, doesn’t mean that it will work for you.
